Shell element, membrane (drilling degree of freedom)

Problem. A slender cantilever bending in its own plane tests the rotational freedom about the node normal. The compared quantity is the horizontal tip displacement.

Reference document. The beam theory closed form combining the bending and shear displacements is used.

The horizontal tip displacement of the cantilever is the sum of the bending and shear contributions.

δ=PL33EI+PLκ GA\delta = \dfrac{PL^3}{3EI} + \dfrac{PL}{\kappa\,GA}

Numerical model. The cantilever is modelled with twenty by four quadrilateral shell elements and a length-to-depth ratio of ten. The out-of-plane freedoms are held at every node.
