Problem. The hoop force at mid-height of a cylindrical silo under internal pressure is compared. A separate check confirms that the hoop force is tension.

Reference document. Membrane shell theory is used. The pressure comes from the Janssen relation.

In membrane shell theory the hoop force equals the internal pressure times the radius.

Nθ=ph RN_{\theta} = p_h\,R

Numerical model. The silo is modelled with forty-eight by forty quadrilateral shell elements. The value is taken at mid-height, away from the influence of the fixed base.
